New York fine art photography galleries (in alphabetical order)

The list below includes renowned galleries which focus primarily on photography. I have incorporated listings for galleries which typically represent established photographers, have rotating photography exhibitions, and which participate in art fairs. I have also included smaller cooperative spaces and artist-owned galleries. The gallery scene in New York is in a constant state of flux, and was already seeing huge upheavals before the pandemic. New York City is simply not an easy place for art galleries to thrive these days due to the extreme rents and operational expense. The pandemic forced many spaces to close permanently or to shift to an online-only model. Consolidation of small galleries continues and New York is well on the path to being left with only a smaller number of mega-galleries operating physical spaces.

1. Andrew Prokos Fine Art Photography

This is my own gallery space on Broadway in TriBeCa, which I opened in late 2018 after 14 years of successfully operating as an online art gallery. The gallery displayed large-scale photographs from my conceptual photography series such as Night & Day, Gehry’s Children, and Inverted. It also showed large format New York cityscapes and Western landscapes. You can see some of the fine art series on display at the gallery in the portfolios shown below. In contrast to many of the galleries listed here, I did not show work from a roster of third-party photographers. The space was exclusively used to feature my own work to the growing set of collectors and buyers passing through New York City. The gallery remained open through the end of 2020, when I finally decided to close it during the pandemic. I get many people calling asking if the space is still open, or if I plan to reopen it. I answer that question here.

8. Lik Gallery

Lik Gallery is another example of an artist-owned gallery, or in this case a chain of galleries. The Lik model of retail galleries are all located in high-foot-traffic urban shopping districts where affluent tourists part with considerable sums for Lik’s ‘limited editions’ of 900+ prints. The New York city gallery was located on West Broadway for many years in a large and well-appointed space. That space has now closed, which calls into question whether Lik’s model of selling artwork in affluent shopping districts frequented by tourists will continue to work outside of the Las Vegas casino environment where many of his galleries are currently located.

Soho Photo Gallery, despite the gallery’s name, is not located in Soho at all, but in the adjacent neighborhood of TriBeCa. The gallery was founded in 1971 by photographers from the New York Times. As an artist run gallery, Soho Photo is more a photography community than a commercial gallery per se. The gallery also holds annual and member competitions which are quite popular in New York and nationally.

You won’t see a lot of cutting edge new work here, but if classic portraiture and elegant fashion photography by masters such as Richard Avedon, Cecil Beaton, Horst, Helmut Newton, Deborah Turbeville, and Ellen von Unwerth, are your thing you’ll find them all here.
