MART Museum Exhibition

Andrew’s photography will be included in an upcoming exhibition at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto, in northern Italy. The exhibition will include works by legendary photographers “whose work has explored perfection in technique and form” . From the museum:

“On the occasion of the second centenary of the artist’s death , Mart is celebrating the legacy of one of the most important sculptors of all time – Antonio Canova (1757 – 1822) . This large exhibition explores the modern relevance of his work in contemporary languages , from #photography to more recent sculptural work , highlighting links, dialogues, continuity and juxtapositions.

There are 150 works on show ranging from the 19th century to our own day. A large section of the exhibition will offer some insightful dialogues between Canova and the foremost photographers of the 20th century, who explored perfection in technique and form, gathering and sublimating it within the human body. There will be works by Wilhelm von Gloeden, Helmut Newton, Robert Mapplethorpe, Edward Weston, Richard Avedon, and Irving Penn.

Alongside them, in counterpoint, works will be displayed by photographers who inspired research in the opposite direction, such as Czech photographer Miroslav Tichý, who in the 1960s captured, often surreptitiously, the truth of the imperfect female body; Jan Saudek and Joel-Peter Witkin, who portrayed the more decadent and grotesque aspects of the body; and Diane Arbus with her merciless realism. Finally, one section of the exhibition will be dedicated to the #photographers who documented and interpreted Canova’s art, perpetuating his ideal vision: the Alinari brothers, Luigi Spina, Paolo Marton, Massimo Listri, and Mimmo Jodice.”
