Jornal O Globo newspaper from Brazil interviews photographer Andrew Prokos about his award-winning photography series Niemeyer's Brasilia

‘Niemeyer’s Brasilia’: nocturnal clicks of the works of a Brazilian master

Photographic series records icons of architecture in the nation’s capital

RIO — Two months after the death of Oscar Niemeyer, who passed away on December 5, 2012, there is eye candy for anyone who admires the works of this architectural icon. Enchanted by the Brazilian’s talent, the American photographer Andrew Prokos produced a series of night images of the buildings in Brasília designed by the Brazilian over more than 50 years.

In “Niemeyer’s Brasília” Prokos captures the surreal and curvilinear design left by the architect in the Planalto Palace, the Federal Supreme Court and the National Congress, all built in the Plaza of the Three Powers. The clicks also include the Itamaraty Palace, the National Museum of Brasília and the Metropolitan Cathedral of the federal capital of Brazil.

The work earned the photographer an award in the Night Photography category at the 2013 International Photography Awards, which has a panel of judges made up of more than 70 international gallery owners, photo editors and art collectors, including professionals from The National Geographic Society, from The New York Times Magazine, Yale University Art Gallery and The Royal Photographic Society, among others.

“I was fascinated by Oscar Niemeyer’s buildings as works of art in themselves, and by the fact that Niemeyer had an unprecedented influence on the capital’s architecture during his long life,” says Prokos.
